Honor Outstanding 2004

College/University Female Student Athletes

On Saturday, June 12, 2004, the following outstanding female student athletes from AAUW College/University Partner institutions will be honored at the SA/SEC Joint Regional Conference.

 

***Barry University, Miami Shore, FL

 

Joanna Bell, Hamilton, ON

 

Joanna is a three-year letterman in varsity Rowing. She was the Rower of the Year (2001-02). CRSA All-American (2002). Has led Barry to the inaugural National Championship in 2002. She has won several gold, silver and bronze medals at various regattas throughout her career.

 

CRSA Academic All-American (2002 & 2003); Member of Dean’s List and President’s List and Honors Program at Barry. She is a two-time All SSC Academic Honorable Mention.

 

She is the secretary for the Student Athletic Trainers Association, B.U.C.S. tutor, volunteer reader to children and volunteer rowing coach to raise money for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. She participated in the Women in Sports Day and taught children how to use the ergometer.

 

***Berry College, Mt. Berry, GA

 

Kristin Johnson, Lilburn, GA

 

Kristin is a member of the Berry Women’s Soccer Team. She is an Academic All-American and has led her team to being national ranked for the last three years.

 

She is a member of Kappa Mu Epsilon (math honor society) and Sigma Delta Pi ( Spanish honor society). Academic All-American.

 

She participates in Athletes Bettering the Community as the president. She is also a Church Youth Leader.

 

***Clemson University, Clemson, SC

 

Allison Mitch, Signal Mountain, TN

 

Allison is a Clemson senior women’s soccer player. She was a National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American in 2002, a member of the All-ACC Torment team in 2002 and a second-team All-ACC selection on the field in 2003. She started all 20 games and has started 83 or 86 games over her career. She scored three game-winning goals during her time as a Tiger.

 

She was awarded a postgraduate scholarship worth $7,500 from the National Collegiate Athletic Association. To qualify for this scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.2 (out of 4.0) and must have performed with distinction as a member of a varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.

 

She also won the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship for her performance in the classroom and on the field as well as her involvement in the community. She graduated in May 2004 in Aquaculture Fisheries & Wildlife Biology.

 

***Duke University, Durham, NC

 

Amanda Johnson, Bettendorf, Iowa

 

Amanda is a four-time All-ACC selection and a three-time All-American. She owns a 111-32 singles mark in four years of action and in dual match singles; she has an 81-17 record. She had one of the most successful freshman seasons in Duke’s history in 2000-01. She was named ITA All-American in both singles and doubles in 2002-03. Amanda will be unable to attend the SA/SEC Joint Regional Conference, as she will be in China representing the United States in a tennis tournament.

 

She is a member of Phi Eta Sigma and graduated in May 2004 in Public Policy.

 

She is a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, a volunteer for the Ronald McDonald House and a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority.


***Ferrum College, Ferrum, VA

 

Lindsay Cox, Waldorf, MD

 

Lindsay is a member of the Ferrum College Softball team. She was selected as a three time All-Conference, a three time Academic All-Conference, All-State (2001) and All-Region (2003).

 

She was on the Dean’s List all 7 semesters and obtained a 4.0 for the last 3 semesters. She received BS in Biology in May 2004.

 

She is the President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and active with the Big Buddy/Little Buddy Program.

 

***Furman University, Greenville, SC

 

Laney Harris, Loganville, GA

 

Laney in a member of the Furman Women’s Basketball team and played a major role on the team. She played in 28 games in the 2004 season and averaged 4.0 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. She is also the Co-captain of the team.

 

She is a three time Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll member. Her grade point average is 3.6 and she is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society.

 

She is the vice-president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

 

***Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA

 

Alexandra Stewart, Norcross, GA

 

Alex is a member of the Georgia Tech Women’s Basketball team. She was selected as a third team all-Atlantic Coast Conference honoree in 2003 and honorable mention in 2004. She led the ACC in assists the last two years, averaging 9.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game. She played more games in a Georgia Tech uniform than any other Yellow Jacket. She ranks among the top three in Tech history and top 20 in the ACC annals in career assists.

 

She is the recipient of the ACC Top Six for Service Award, recognizing community service. She serves on the Georgia Tech Student-Athlete Advisory Board.

 

Alex graduated in May 2004 in International Affairs.

 

Erin Voeltz, Westlake Village, CA

 

Erin is a member of the Georgia Tech Women’s Softball team. She was the 2003 CoSIDA Academic All-District III first team. She is a right-handed starting pitcher with a 13-5 record and a 0.93 ERA for Georgia Tech’s nationally ranked softball team. She pitched a perfect game in the 2003 NCAA Regional. She holds the school record for strikeouts in a game with 16 and has 15 career shutouts. She ranks second in school history in career victories (55), innings pitched (622.1) complete games (65), strikeouts (452) and saves (6). She helped Tech win the conference title as a sophomore.

 

She was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll for the last three years. She was awarded Georgia Tech’s Robert Cup as the school’s top senior scholar-athlete. She received Georgia Tech’s Bobby Dodd Scholarship.

 

She is the recipient of the ACC Top Six for Service Award, recognizing community service. She serves on the Georgia Tech Student-Athlete Advisory Board.

 

Sekita Grant, Orindo, CA

 

Sekita is a member of the Georgia Tech Women’s Tennis team. She is in her third year as a starting player in singles and doubles for Georgia Tech’s nationally ranked women’s tennis team. Her career singles record of 38-20, includes a 12-7 matches won record in 2004. She has helped Tech reach the NCAA Tournament for the last two years. She spent four week ranked in the Top 50 in doubles in 2002.

 

She received the Tower Award, which is presented by the Georgia Tech Office of Minority Education & Development to recognize outstanding academic achievement by minority students. She was on the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll during 2002-2003.

 

She serves on the Georgia Tech Student-Athlete Advisory Board. She was selected to intern with Smith Barney during summer, 2003. She organized and participated in two tennis clinics for the local Boys & Girls Club.

 

***James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA

 

Kelly Ann Berkemeier, Dallas, TX

 

Kelly is a member of the James Madison University softball team.

 

She has a 3.0 Grade Point Average and a member of Dukes.

 

She enjoys soccer, children, swimming, arts and crafts and especially traveling. She is a member of the Fellowship for Christian Athletes and the SAAC committee.

 

***Maryville College, Maryville, TN

 

Karen Tobias, Mason, OH

 

Karen is a member of the Maryville College women’s Volleyball team. She was the national leader in digs for 2002 and 2003. She played in three National tournaments and was the Conference leader. She is the volleyball team captain.

 

She is an art scholar and enjoys all activities.

 

***Mississippi State University, Starkville, MS

 

Iythia McMichael, Nacagdoches, TX

 

Iythia was a member of the Mississippi State University Softball Team. She was a 3-time National Player of the Week; USA Elite Team Member -2003; and Member of the 8 All-Tourney Teams. She lead the NCAA in batting with a 433; AC- 2001-2003. Iythia was the Player of the Year 2003-2004.

 

She was on the Dean’s List in 2001 and 2002 and the President’s List in 2002 and 2003. She was on the Bulldog Honor Role 2002-2003 and an Academic All-SEC 2001-2003. Iythia was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the M-Club Community Service Committee. She was also participated in Conversation Partners-Foreign Exchange, Coaching, Feed the Needy Lunch Program and AAD - Athletes Against Drugs.

 

Kathryn Jaspers, Prescott, AZ

 

Kathryn was a member of the Mississippi State University Softball team. She was a two time SEC Player of the week. She received numerous honors in the NCAA arena . She was selected to participate in the Society of Scholars (which is the 1% of graduating seniors). She was on the 1st Team Verizon Academic All-District, Softball 2002-2003. She received the Psychology Scholar (which is the top 4 graduating seniors, 2003). She received the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award - MSU Psychology Forum (April 2003).

 

She is a volunteer for the Winter Softball Camp and the Sudduth Elementary school. She participated in the Litter Pick-up and Bully’s Book Blitz. She was the Vice-President for the M-Club and member of the National Honor Society, Psi Chi.

 

***North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC

 

Jennifer Jassawalla, Raleigh, NC

 

Jennifer is a member of the North Carolina State University tennis team. She was a four-year letter winner for varsity tennis. She was in the Top ten most winning percentage in North Carolina State University history of Women’s Tennis.

 

She was on the Dean’s List 2000-2002. Her grade point average is 3.65 out of 4.00. Her major is Biomedical Engineering and Biological Engineering.

 

She is a varsity intercollegiate tennis player for North Carolina State University. She served as President for 2 years for the North Carolina State Student-Athlete Advisory committee. She was a team leader as well as a peer mentor. She is a Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Action Servant (2003-04) and worked for Habitat for the Humanity.

 

***University of West Florida, Pensacola, FL

 

Brianna Oeser, Pensacola, FL

 

Brianna is a member of the University of West Florida Soccer team. In 2003, she led the team in points (37) and goals (18), which were both a UWF single-season records. Currently ranked third in the UWF Record Book for career goals (35) and fifth for points (76). She led the team in goals her freshman year. She was named a 2003 GSC Player of the Week. UWF has made the NCAA Tournament all three years Brianna as a key forward and midfielder.

 

She was named on the 2003 GSC All-Academic Team and the 2003 Verison All District III Team. She is a three-time member of the GSC Academic Honor Roll.

 

She enjoys working in summer camps for high school students and Club Soccer in Niceville and Destin, FL. She participated in Habitat for the Humanity and has worked YES Clinics for three years.

 

***Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA

 

Jessica Morris, Coatesville, PA

 

Jessica is a member of the Virginia Tech Cross Country team. She participated in the 2002-03 NCAA Regionals, 2001-3 Big East Championships, where she was the Most Valuable Player in 2002. She was the 2001 Rookie of the Year. On the indoor track, she helped win the 2002-03 Big East Championship and on the outside track, she helped win the 2002 Big East Championship.

 

She is a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society, the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honorary Society, and the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society. She is a Frank Loria Award Winner and a Skelton Award Winner. She was selected Outstanding Female Student by the Virginia Tech Athletic Department. She served at the 2003-04 Student Athletic Advisory Committee President.

 

She served on the Student Athletic Advisory Committee and worked with Hokies with Heart community outreach. She was a speaker for Education Week. She also volunteered with nursing homes, VT Night, Adopt-A-Child, tutoring and Frosty 5K.

 

***Wesleyan College, Macon, Ga

 

Elizabeth Marie Santos, Romoland, CA

 

Elizabeth was a member of the Wesleyan College Women’s Softball Team. She was on the Softball All-Academic Team, 2002-03. She received the Two-Sport Athlete Award, 2002-2003, and the Softball Coaches Award, 2002-2003

 

She has a Grade Point Average of 3.6. She received the U.S. Achievement Academy Naitonal Collegiate Communication Award and was selected as the Collegiate All-American Scholar. She received the Phi Kappa Phi Scholastic Achievement Award (2001-2003). She was selected for Mortar Board National Collegiate Honor Society, Lambda Pi Eta National Community Honor Society, and the Wesleyan College Honor Society.
